In De Haan, Belgium, app user ‘Zeit Geist’ was in the right place at the right time to spot a tuba developing beneath a storm out over the North Sea. This rotating cloud feature can appear where air is rushing up into the cloud. If the rotation and its associated winds are extreme, a tuba can develop into a tornado as it touches down to the surface. But forming out over the sea like this, where it is not particularly severe, it develops into a waterspout, with its characteristic spray ring where the sea water is being picked up at the base of the vortex. A tuba is like a finger of cloud reaching down to touch the land or water below, while off in the distance to the right, where rain shafts darken the horizon, is the footprint of the storm’s cold downdraft.
