1. And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
2. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
3. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Revelation 3:1-3
This is Christ talking to a church called Sardis. Sardis was a city protected by mountains as their shield. They became comfortable and believed the city invincible. An earthquake devastated the city in A.D. 17.
The meaning of Sardis is "those escaping" or "that which remains".
Christ is speaking to any church or member that think they are alive, yet not doing what He asked, He tells them they are dead.
Annette Griffen said, "A glowing reputation in a full house are worthless if they are only the toe tags of a dead church.
Are we more concerned on boosting our image and the church, or Christ?
Have we left Christ's agenda, to pursue our own?
Are we firm on teaching Christ's Gospel or human wisdom?
Are we encouraging repentance?
Are we a Lighthouse to the lost? Are we strengthening the faith of believers?
Christ says to hold fast to the Gospel. Keep doing God's work. Repent from dead works, and overcome evil.
Otherwise He says in verse 5, those who refuse their names will be blotted out of the book of life, but the overcomer He will confess their names before His Father and His angels. Amen.
