I'm blaming the current Academia Architects that don't promote solutions to heat recovery, overlooked/excluded, in the solar rush to landfills. I'm posting the preliminary results of the heat/utility reduction activity I / they (apparently) haven't looked into much lately.
5(?) pics today; the first two show the results of my modifications; my bill statements comparison from last year and last month to now. The Nov. to Nov. graph show a 8% decrease in the amount energy used. I installed the plastic drive through air barrier to patio door on the 15th, so double that.
The Dec. to Nov. graph shows the amount of energy used required to heat the space according to outside, ambient temperature. The other two show the insulation added to stop the cold air from circulating. Adding 'soft storage' in lower cabinets (WATCH THE FIRE THING!), along the cooler areas/baseboards, may create problems, but consider it.
I use air to heat water and exhaust colder air than pulled in. That air cools interior for summer, but a real pain to keep out in the winter. That means insulation to keep the -30F moving through the 2” exhaust pipe.
Heat pumps are required to use more energy -parabolic- (look it up) as the collection temperature drops. Most home uses use vertical holes to reach a 50 F temp to pull from (+ saturation delay), but not much (as one example) has been done in HORIZONTAL / trenching absorption (cost), particularly in southern applications.
With the correct design of the home (alignment/window-tile placement/wind suppression/etc.) and a heat pump location/activation/storage, the mechanical should never be a (sultry word here) problem.
