1. Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me.
2. Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help.
3. Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.
4. Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt.
5. Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the LORD chase them.
Psalm 35:1-5
The psalmist was well acquainted with persecution from Saul and his associates.
And this psalm may be applied to the church and God's people.
Christ, being the Victor over Satan, He is fully able to defend His own in their time of need.
The shield and buckler are defensive weapons used in close combat, the Lord is very close at all times.
The spear an offensive weapon exspressive of God's vengeance on the enemies of God's own.
Christ, the author of our salvation, is appointed, promised, and sent to be our Savior. There is no other.
All who rise against God's people will be brought to confusion and turned back they shall never have victory against The Living God. God alone has prepared a place for the wicked and a reward for His saints.
The enemies of God will be as chaff in the wind, not able to defeat God, nor do lasting harm to His people. We are to stand firm, no retreat, and watch the salvation of God on our behalf. Amen.
