1. Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2. Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
3. And this we will do, if God permit.
4. For it is impossible for those who once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5. And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6. If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Hebrews 6:1-6
Here the author is speaking to converted Jews. They were to have left behind their teachings, and put their faith in Christ.
They had a doctrine of baptism, which was a washing prescribed by law, a laying on of hands on the animal before being sacrificed for their sins, resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment, which separated them from the Gentiles.
Now he speaks of two different people, those who take in the word of God, the Gospel message, and embrace it with affection, and are transformed, and are nourished by it. And those to appear to receive it, but will not let go of the old nature, these will continue to enjoy their old ways and sins refusing to submit to Christ.
A backslider who turns back to Christ has redemption, but no person who rejects Christ, will enter the reward.
We are in a constant battle against this world and this flesh, yet Christ has gained the Victory and none of His shall be ashamed. Amen.
