F around and find out / Ya get what ya pay for; carburetors .
Like a mystery problem with a non-starting, internal combustion engine, usually turns out to be electrical, the difference between a 'almost runs' and the strong acceleration usually turns out to be the carb.
Besides modifying the linkages and other typical connections to make the new carb to fit to the '86(?) quad, I have currently replaced this assembly 4 times to get the internal measurements to work right. Replacement of components is quite a way apart from having to break loose the float bowl retention screws with a channel locks (from the screws being torqued so much that a Phillips screwdriver can't remove them, to be able to, reset the float bowl float level to a (typically parallel to the bowl seam, set at the factory) from a point so low, the starter had to remain connected to suck enough gas (on choke) to trip the engine over 'just one more time'.
Starter fluid can go a long way here to troubleshoot the lack of gas, as can a small amount of gass poured -down- the carb. Neither of which is an option here. Sometimes one can't “go into the parts supply, and 'buy a vowel' in Hillbilly engineering.
Some good news, I thought I had 'F'ed the battery with a location too close to the exhaust (see pics), but the amount of time running the starter has defiantly proven that 'melt dent' secure. I move the battery to a location closer to the -proposed- alternator charged supplemental (ac) power supply machinery.
Now all I need to do is flush out the re-routed brake lines, attach a alternator to the crankshaft drive, (when it runs alone first), make a cargo container transport on the front, and move a boot load of rock and dirt around before the first snow.
