Martha Turek (Member 61,138) rose very early one morning to hike Haleakalā, an active volcano on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. She reached the volcano’s peak just in time for sunrise. ‘Many were disappointed it wasn’t perfectly clear for the impending sunrise,’ Martha told us. ‘But what made the sunrise so spectacular for me were the clouds it rose out of!’ The lower cloud layer was Stratocumulus stratiformis which, from Martha’s position, appeared as rough rolls. The rising Sun had only peeked over the horizon, but was already spreading honey tones across the sky and a patch of Altocumulus clouds. This is what’s known as breakfast for cloudspotters.
