Carol Tepper (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 58,442) was sailing the Prince Christian Sound in Southern Greenland when she saw rainbow rings radiating from the Sun as it shone through a thin Cirrocumulus cloud. This effect is known as a corona, and it’s the result of tiny cloud particles diffracting the sunlight to create a colourful crown surrounding the Sun. Should you ever see a corona by day, take care to block out the Sun with your hand so that you can take in the colours without damaging your eyes. Even better, wear some sunglasses too, which will make the iridescence stand out even more.
