5. Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?6. They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of the riches;7. None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:8. (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)9. That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.Psalm 49:5-9 The wisdom of the psalmist as he speaks of hidden things. He has no fear of death, even his knowledge of the sins that surround him. The days of evil, old age, which brings sickness and death, does not worry him. His confidence and salvation is in Christ, and it is sure. The rich man has no concerns of what the next day brings, he has more than he needs, but in his abundance, he can not rescue his brother from destruction. He can give him help from his abundance. But his soul is out of his reach. No one but Christ can redeem any from the debt of sin. It is said here, it is precious, meaning, heavy, hard to understand. What can a man give for a soul, nothing, the only acceptable payment is the blood of Christ. And this payment last for eternity. And though the rich man could live a thousand years, yet, death would catch him and his brother, and only Christ can redeem and give eternal life. Amen.
