‘Sierra Wave clouds’ is a local term for lenticularis clouds that form on the lee side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, US. Like many lenticularis clouds, they form as winds rise to pass over mountains and develop a rising and dipping flow downwind of the peaks. Disc-shaped clouds can form where the air is coolest at the peaks in the wavelike airflow. Denise Waterbury (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 56,618) spotted these Sierra Wave formations at sunset from her front yard in Bishop, California. Denise was viewing the Altocumulus lenticularis clouds from beneath, looking up at the bases of the discs as they merged into the general mix of Altocumulus. Where lit on their bases by the fiery rays, the cloud features burned magenta against the Altocumulus in shadow above.
