General Motors partnered with naval architects at Sparkman & Stephens to rapidly develop the DUKW (D=production year, U=utility vehicle, K=type of drive train, W=number of axles). They could carry up to 5,000 pounds of cargo or approximately 24 soldiers. Often referred to as "DUCKS", many of these unique vehicles survived WWII and are still in use today.
