This is a picture of the construction of the Kowaliga Bridge on Lake Martin. Before the dam was built, the power company realized that the road across this part of the lake would be a big issue. They first proposed a free ferry but residents were adamant that a bridge was required. Because of the depth of lake at this location, the construction was a challenge in those days. The piers were built as the dam was being constructed. Once the dam was finished and water backed up Kowaliga Creek, the steel beams that were built at the dam were loaded on a barge and towed to the bridge site to be lifted into place.
