Jenny McKean (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 48,442) spotted a sweeping wing-shaped cloud over Geelong, Victoria, Australia. This Altocumulus cloud is of the variety lacunosus, which is Latin for ‘having holes or furrows’. It is a short-lived formation, whose gaps are caused by pockets of cold air sinking through a cloud-filled layer of warmer air below. The pattern of lacunosus is often likened to a honeycomb, but in the low pink light of this particular evening, it adorned Jenny’s cloud with the plumage of a flamingo.
