The National Geographic Resolution is a cruise ship built for polar expeditions. On a recent voyage, it stopped at Jan Mayen, a Norwegian volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean off the eastern coast of Greenland. There, the National Geographic photographer Macduff Everton (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 47,306) spotted Altocumulus lenticularis clouds hovering downwind of the island. They formed as moist airstreams blowing up and over the island’s mountains then rose and dipped in wavelike flows beyond. The lenticularis clouds appeared as droplets condensed in the cooling air at the crests of these invisible waves. They were skyworthy vessels in which the imagination could set sail.
