Francesca Mackay (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 48,584) was rudely awakened early one morning in the Ayora Valley of Valencia, Spain by the rumble of thunder. She went outside to watch the leaden skies and was soon followed by her eight cats. Within minutes, the atmosphere erupted with thunderclaps and lightning bolts, causing the cats to scatter. Francesca headed back in to make a morning cup of tea. When she stepped out once more, this time to herd the cats, ‘the sky was in a riot.’ The formation is Stratocumulus asperitas, the form of the low, clumpy layer Stratocumulus that is named after the Latin for ‘roughness’. Such clouds do not themselves tend to produce much if any precipitation, though they often appear in close proximity to Cumulonimbus storm clouds, which certainly do. Francesca’s feline friends were right to scatter, given the likelihood of the nearby storm cloud raining cats and dogs.
