Are the thunder gods of New Mexico preparing their drums? That’s what Richard Wagner (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 51,457) wondered with his son, Rich, who spotted this mushroom of a cloud building over Sandia Crest near Albuquerque, New Mexico, US. Thunderheads are Cumulonimbus clouds that have grown huge enough to have developed massive separations in electrical charge that lead to lightning bolts, which are hot enough to explosively expand the air along their paths. Rich and Richard’s cloud looks to be building, and so might be on its way to becoming a Cumulonimbus, perhaps spreading out even more at the top as it towers higher in the atmosphere. But it was 11.30 am when they spotted the cloud, and it looks too early to judge whether the drums would be coming out that day.
