Jon Comer (Cloud Appreciation Society Member 43,608) spotted the distinctive lobe-like features known as mamma clouds, painted an otherworldly yellow by the setting Sun over Oklahoma, US. Nobody’s quite certain how mamma form, but the most dramatic examples develop, like these, on the underside of mature Cumulonimbus storm clouds. They are usually positioned to the rear of storm’s movement. Cumulonimbus mamma like these are the vision of a tempestuous sky, so it’s ironic that Jon spotted his over somewhere as calm and undisturbed sounding as Stillwater, Oklahoma.
