IN VICTORIAN BRITAIN, TREADMILLS WERE USED AS A FORM OF PUNISHMENT.
Introduced in 1818, penal treadmills were a means of using prisoners’ muscle power to avoid idleness and pump water, mill corn or power ventilators in mines. Slightly different from the gym equipment used today, penal treadmills had steps set into two cast iron wheels that rotated creating an endless staircase.
