The horseshoe vortex cloud is one of the rarest and most ephemeral of cloud formations. The cloud develops in a horizontal vortex of air, and it typically hangs around for just a few minutes before breaking up. Being so ephemeral, it is a prize catch for any cloudspotter. And, like other horseshoes, the formation could be considered to bring luck. Kathryn Naumenko (Member 53,364) spotted not one but two horseshoe vortex clouds over Canberra, Australia. ‘In the hours leading up to our national men’s football team winning through to the last 16 at the World Cup,’ she told us, ‘this equally rare event appeared over the nation’s capital. Do you believe in omens?’
