#Repost///@roaringcenturies: on this day in 1949, the Soviet Union lifted its blockade of Berlin, which was a significant victory for the Western powers.Following WW II, Germany was divided into 4 occupation zones controlled by the US, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. Berlin, located inside the Soviet zone, was also divided into 4 sectors, each controlled by one of the occupying powers. The Soviet Union blockaded all road, rail, and water access to the Western controlled sectors of Berlin, in an attempt to force the other 3 powers to abandon their presence in the city. This blockade led to the Berlin Airlift, in which the US and its allies flew in supplies and provisions to the city using cargo planes. On May 12, 1949, the Soviet Union officially ended the blockade. #history #americanhistory #classic #historia #ushistory #wwii
