///@gunslingersaloon: Everyone knows that the vehicles used in the Star Wars movies and television shows are partially based on real US military prototypes first conceived during the Civil War. At the height of the war Ulysses S. Grant created the SPL short for the Steampunk Propulsion Laboratories and one of their first inventions was the steam powered At-At. A mix of top secret railroad technology it was never put into use because the war ended before production could begin. A story very similar to Howard Hughes Spruce Goose. In the early 1970s all this tech was unclassified and George Lucas poured through the documents for inspiration. On a side note the SPL was also the home of Hellboy.
