27. And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.28. And he left all, rose up, and followed him.29. And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. 30. But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?31. And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.32. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:27-32 Luke shares the conversion of Levi, who became the disciple Matthew. Levi was a tax collector, and they were hated of all people, for they gained wealth by increasing taxes and keeping the excess as profit. The words of Christ, "Follow me," were so powerful, he left everything, friends, business, and all his wealth, to follow Christ. As Levi was bid, so are we, Christ speaks to all "Follow me." Now the religious leaders, find fault, and ask the disciples, why Christ was eating with sinners. Christ answers, that only sick people need a doctor, and only those admitted to be sinners, could benefit from knowing Christ. All have fallen short of God because of sin, but there are those that will never admit their guilt. Christ reveals, that those who think they are righteous, and will not submit to Christ, are lost, and His grace and pardon are bestowed on all repentant sinners, and their redemption is sure, in Christ the Lord. Amen.
