12. Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
13. Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
14. For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.
15. If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.
16. When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
17. Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
18. Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
Psalm 73:
12-18 πŸ™πŸ»
The psalmist sees the ungodly, doing as they see fit, without reverence, or love for God. He sees them prosper, in worldly things, but not spiritually. Their sins do not disturb them, they have no care of the world to come.
He speaks foolishly, for what man, can clean his own heart from sin, or think he is clean by washing his hands.
This cleansing is costly, it comes by the blood of Christ the Son of God, and there is no other way.
The psalmist kept this in his own mind as to not not offend the children of God.
But in his mind it was painful to try and reconcile the prosperity of the wicked.
Until he met God in His sanctuary, and was instructed in God's Word.
Then he understood the end of both the godly and the wicked. The end of the righteous, being peace, rest, salvation, and eternal life. The end of the wicked, ruin, destruction, and eternal death. Amen.
