20. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.21. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.22. And the voice of the harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, or whatsoever craft he be, shall be found anymore in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;23. And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants where the great men of the earth; for by the sorceries were all nations deceived.24. And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. Revelation 18 20-24 ππ» The love of God, and His mercy, is shown at Christmas, in the Lord, coming as a man, to save the world from sin. Here John sees the destruction of Babylon, a picture of the Roman government, that persecuted followers of Christ. Their rejection of Christ, rejection of salvation, leaves them to a judgement, that can only come from God. Total destruction. No joyful sounds, or useful work, a famine shall come, and the city will be deprived of every comfort. The word sorceries, is defined in Greek as, magical arts, in connection with idolatry. Pharmakeia, it's where we get the word pharmacy,(medication) from. It is the use of witchcraft, which seeks power from the enemy Satan, and a complete refusal of God's way. This alone is reason for the destruction, but mention is made of the slain prophets and saints of God, in the city of Rome, and through out the entire empire. Thus the plain truth, without Christ there is no safe place from destruction. Amen.
