The Labyrinth represents the symbolic path of man towards God. According to the alchemists the path leads inside oneself, towards a kind of inner and hidden sanctuary. The arrival at the center introduces an invisible dwelling, which everyone can imagine according to their intuition. Within this center there is a real transformation of the ego, which is affirmed on the way back, in the passage from darkness to light. In English, the term labyrinth is generally synonymous with maze. As a result of the long history of unicursal representation of the mythological Labyrinth, however, many contemporary scholars and enthusiasts observe a distinction between the two. In this specialized usage maze refers to a complex branching multicursal puzzle with choices of path and direction, while a unicursal labyrinth has only a single path to the center. A labyrinth in this sense has an unambiguous route to the center and back and presents no navigational challenge. Can you spot 👁️ the labyrinth pavement at Chartres Cathedral?🌀This huge limestone labyrinth was laid in the floor of the nave at Chartres towards the end of the rebuilding of the cathedral after the fire of 1194. It measures almost 13m in diameter – making it the largest surviving medieval church labyrinth – and comprises a pathway wound in eleven concentric circles leading from the scalloped edge to the cusped interior.
