34. When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
35. And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
36. Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
37. For their heart was not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant.
38. But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39. For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
Psalm 78:34-39
The psalmist speaks of those that perished, having been saved from the slavery and persecution of Egypt.
For they perished because of unbelief.
And the multitude seeing this repented but not earnestly nor with their whole heart..
For their heart was not right before Him. Nor were they prepared to do any good work.
I know myself that I am very guilty of this very same act.
And I know I must trust Christ, for without Him, I am destroyed.
God forgave those in the wilderness, how much more those who are covered in Christ's righteousness.
For nothing has changed with men, we are born and die, Christ being in the form of a man, knows our weaknesses, and His compassion fails not. He came to save us not because we were worthy, or deserved saving, but because we were weak and could in no way save ourselves or others. Amen.
