1.Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving- kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightiest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Psalm 51:1-4
The psalmist confesses his sin before God, asking for His mercy, because God is loving, and is the only person who can forgive the judgment of sin.
Most turn from God in times of sin, because of guilt, shame, even fear.
But it is to Christ we must run, for there is help in no other.
This Psalm was written over a thousand years before Christ was born, yet the psalmist seeks His forgiveness.
He acknowledged his sin, and transgressions, for his sin branched out an affected many people, so it is with ours.
He mentioned the sin we were born with, we sin without being taught, because it is our nature.
And even if we sin against men, it is God's law, that we rebelled against, and if ignored, the end is judgment and eternal death.
Christ has paid the price in His blood, that your sins, and iniquities, are blotted out of existence.
Let us learn from the psalmist prayer,
"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." Amen.
