Speaking for myself I send my kids to public schoo. I live by the adage of "know thy enemy" I believe we teach our children in the way they should go. If I teach my children right no amount of indoctrination is going to sway them from themselves. Another cliche "know thyself" if we teach our children with a moral compass and ensure they have all the tools and are prepared for danger than they will have confidence enough to stand alone in defense of their own convictions. Behold I send you out as sheep amongst the wolves. Our innocent lambs are warned about the wolves in sheep's clothing but often forgotten is the Shepard brings the most of them to his own table. A good example of this is stranger danger. We look for the creeper at the park or the lurker in the van. When most children are abused by someone they know, respect and love. I get involved in what my kids are being taught so I can point out the contradictions or we can delve deeper to get a better understanding and whole picture. I taught my children from the time they could speak about their bodies and consent I never used the cutsey names but sex was broken down to no mystery. Penis and vagina. Kept it very clinical and medical. I knew from my own experiences of secual exploitation that if I didn't teach my kids, someone else would. It has only served them and me. They weren't afraid to stand up and speak out against authority when it went against their beliefs. They weren't ashamed to come to me with any questions as much as I prepared them I am sad to say that it didn't save them from the world. It felt like failure when my own daughter told me she was assaulted. She didn't come to me at the time. She was afraid of what I would do. She is not wrong. I would have gone straight into mama lion mode. My own unhealed and unacknowledged trauma already presented when we had other experiences and without forethought of consequences of fear I would have killed him with my bare hands. She knew it. In all I had done to protect her from the realities I experienced I punished her for being a mirror object, I chose her clothes and her friends. I tried to protect her and in the end it was my own child that protected me. She kept her secret so she could also keep me. In that her trauma began to surface in behaviors I couldn't understand and no amount of asking and probing her and knowing that "something" happened to my child all I could do was speculate. It nearly destroyed my relationship with a good man because I was convinced it was him. It took her years to tell me, unload all her years of resentment and in explaining my own life story and how I felt that I had given her a better life that was given I still failed in holding that space for all those emotions and took it personally when she lashed out at me. It wasn't until I dealt with my own past that my first child has been my greatest teacher. Whether we are homeschooling or making ends meet to pay the bills as long as we are trying, we are doing it right and no matter what you do, this world we brought them into will always ensure it will send lessons we didn't learn or know we had to teach. Public school is just like the internet these days , a plethora of information with little thought on how to teach to discern it. That there is no absolute education that can prepare us for the human condition. How to deal with fear, pain, grief, loss and longing, because that's for us to teach.
