Historically, how many members of the House of Representatives have not sought re-election?
The answer may surprise you.
This graph shows the trend of how many US Representatives did not seek re-election beginning with the first Congress and running to the present session.
Prior to the 1860s, it was common for 40% of the House of Representatives to not seek re-election.
From 1860-1910 the rate steadily declined and has remained steady during the 20th and 21st centuries, averaging around 11% during this period.
In a typical election year, around 40 members of the House will not run for re-election.
