12 Marines and 1 "Doc" (Navy Corpsman) were killed in the attack at Kabul Airport yesterday along with more than 95 US allied Afghan civilians.Thinking of their families who will be getting that visit today in homes where things will never be the same. Thinking I could have been that "Doc" had I made different choices and stayed active. Thinking about how their mission was one of mercy. I'm sad they had to be there at all yet proud of them that they were. Even though mistakes were made, we are not an America who is going to leave our friends behind. We won't save them all, but at least we're trying. And for that, these heroes died in the greatest honor.... trying to save another's life. Salute to you, brothers. And prayers for the 13 Gold Star families who will understand the meaning of Memorial Day in their hearts.
