To my left is the fire place blazing with heat and light. It warms me to the core as I listen to the rain drip loudly on the tin roof that covers the porch to my right. The sound is lovely and soothing, yet confusing. Are we not in the mid to late part of the month of November? Didn't all of the old farmers point out all the signs that we were in for a harsh winter? The bees dove deep underground in August, the deer had more fat on them then I have seen in a long time, the bears were getting close to anything they had to so they could ensure full bellies for a long and harsh winter. Were the signs not there? I don't care for the 40 degrees below zero. That is not a fight I want to have this year with making sure the chickens are warm and their water is not frozen. What then is it that i miss? Snowmobiling to the top of a mountain that had brush too thick to be able to hike up, let alone ride a horse or 4-wheeler to the top of. I miss my kiddos sledding and making snow angels with me. (They seem to love the snow as much as i do.) I miss the quiet, the snow that would fall so quietly it was as if each flake tiptoed to its destination so as not to disturb the forest. Gracefully and quietly landing each in it's perfect spot seeming to have a delightfully mastered plan in mind. I do love the rain as well. But just like each of us, there is a time to be the loud dripping rain, or the pounding voice of the storm that rages on to remind everyone and everything around that it is powerful. There is also a time to quietly calculate each landing place and not shout that it has arrived, much like the quiet snow. I plead for snow, I wish for it desperately from the bottom of my soul. Yes, I know that it slows progress. Maybe that is why I welcome it so freely. When the snow falls and quiets the world, it makes you slow down. It gives you time to reflect, Time to enjoy life and not just rush through it. Winter, we wait for you pleading for you to come and slow our lives down from a roar to the quiet. <3
