View MoreHere are some of the key mosquito-borne diseases associated with the Everglades and Florida: Everglades Virus (EVEV): This alphavirus is related to Venezuelan equine encephalitis and is endemic to Florida. It primarily circulates between Culex mosquitoes and rodents, but humans can become infected through mosquito bites. Symptoms in humans are rare, but can include mild headache, fever, muscle soreness, and in extreme cases, encephalitis. West Nile Virus (WNV): While rare in the United States historically, the virus has established itself along the Eastern seaboard and is transmitted primarily by mosquito bites. Human infections can cause encephalitis. The species most commonly associated with West Nile virus is Culex pipiens, but other species can also carry the virus. Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE): This disease can be transmitted by mosquitoes and, while rare, can cause severe neurological symptoms in humans and horses. St. Louis Encephalitis (SLE): This virus is present in Florida and can cause neurological damage, paralysis, memory loss, and death in severe cases, although many infections are asymptomatic. Dengue Fever: Spread by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, dengue can cause severe flu-like symptoms. Cases are most common in South Florida. Zika Virus: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes can also spread Zika. Florida has experienced travel-related transmissions and authorities advise pregnant women to avoid areas with outbreaks. Chikungunya Fever: This illness is characterized by debilitating joint pain. Malaria: While relatively rare in Florida, malaria outbreaks can occur. Important Notes: Several other viruses have been identified in mosquito populations within the Everglades, including Gumbo Limbo virus, Mahogany Hammock virus, and Shark River virus, but their potential impact on humans is not fully understood. Mosquito populations are most abundant during the wet, warm summers, but can be found year-round in the Everglades. The risk of contracting a mosquito-borne illness can be mitigated through personal protection measures such as using mosquito repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water.
