So beginning around the surge in social networking before and quite obviously because of the last election cycle, I noticed that I was no longer able to 'Follow' anyone new on Facebook. I get, to this day, a dialog that says there is a limit of 5000 -- but nowhere can I find the actual number of those I am following... I have looked for that many months, aggressively! The message says if I want to follow someone new, I have to unfollow someone else... but I have been unfollowing hundreds, for months, and finally got frustrated with Facebook and the fact that there is no third-party product that was able to help me either (even paid apps); Facebook is apparently very guarded about giving third party developers any leverage here (because people like me would probably eagerly pay for it, thereby reducing the advantage Facebook has by castrating people they don't like).
Today, I figured out how to copy out my list of those I'm following... and scrape out all the extraneous information for just a simple list of links to those profiles.
1660. I'm following only 1660 -- not 5000 ... yet I cannot follow anyone new until I 'reduce' to below 5000.
Facebook is crap. And no one will ever convince me that it's just a coding error or data corruption. It's a people corruption.
That's why I'm continuing to shorten that list... but not for the sake of following others... rather, I want an accurate list of those people I want to seek on the alternate social networks that I am moving my life to. See you all there.
