Then came waves of political Islamization, revolutions, and extremist movements that stripped away those freedoms and punished women for choosing how to dress. ▪︎ Iraq: Women in Baghdad rocked Western outfits in the 70s. After decades of war and rising Islamist pressure, “optional” disappeared in many regions, replaced by harassment and intimidation. ▪︎ Malaysia: Veiling was rare in the 60s. The Islamic revival of the 80s changed that fast—social pressure, campus crackdowns, and expectation over choice. ▪︎ Somalia: Urban women wore what they wanted in the 70s. After 1991, Islamist militias enforced dress codes at gunpoint in areas they controlled. ▪︎ Nigeria: Veiling was optional nationwide. After 1999, Sharia states in the north imposed dress expectations on women that never existed before. ▪︎ Afghanistan: The 70s saw women studying at universities without veils. The Taliban erased that era—first in 1996, then again after 2021—mandating full covering with brutal punishment. ▪︎ Syria: Before the civil war, many Syrian women chose their own style. Across all these nations, one pattern stands out: When politics merged with hardline religious enforcement, women lost the freedom they had already won. Today, some of these nations are easing restrictions but not all.
