The Railroad Town That Vanished Into the Forest - Exploring Oregon's Abandoned Salmonberry Railroad

Hidden deep in Oregon’s Coast Range, the remains of the Salmonberry Railroad tell the story of a rail line and a railroad town, slowly reclaimed by the forest. This journey explores abandoned trestles, tunnels, and the vanished town of Cochran inside the Tillamook State Forest.Built through some of the most difficult terrain in the Pacific Northwest, the Salmonberry Railroad once connected the Oregon coast to the rest of the state. Towns like Cochran existed solely to support the railroad adding helper engines, supplying trains, and housing the families who worked the line.Today, little remains. Forest roads are washed out, tracks hang above eroded ground, and massive trestles sit quietly beneath the canopy.In this video, we explore several key locations along the abandoned railroad, including the site of Cochran, the Wolf Creek Trestle and Tunnel 27, and the towering Reliance Creek Trestle.
