(no, it’s not “spraying”) Large long haul aircraft take off much heavier than they’re allowed to land because they’re full of fuel for long flights. If an emergency happens shortly after takeoff, the crew must either fly around to burn fuel or dump fuel to reduce weight to a safe landing limit. That’s exactly what you’re seeing here. Fuel dumping is done at altitude, the fuel atomises and evaporates, and it’s strictly regulated and recorded. It does not reach the ground and it’s not secret. Large aircraft sometimes need to dump fuel before an emergency landing for one simple reason: Weight limits: Every aircraft has two critical weight limits: 1. Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW) – The heaviest the aircraft is allowed to be for takeoff 2. Maximum Landing Weight (MLW) – The heaviest the aircraft is allowed to touch down On long haul aircraft, these two numbers are very far apart. Why the difference is so big: Wide-body jets (777, 787, A330, A350, A380): • Take off full of fuel for long flights • Are not designed to land immediately at that same weight • Landing gear, wings, brakes and structure would be overstressed Example (approx): • 777-200ER MTOW: 297 tonnes • 777-200ER MLW: 213 tonnes That’s 80+ tonnes difference. What happens if something goes wrong after takeoff: If there’s an • Engine failure • Medical emergency • Smoke or warning requiring return The aircraft is still: • Very heavy • Above its safe landing weight So the crew has two options: Option 1 – Burn fuel • Fly around in a hold • Takes time (sometimes hours) Option 2 – Dump fuel • Used when time matters • Faster way to reach MLW Why fuel dumping is safe Fuel jettison systems: • Release fuel from the wingtips or trailing edges • Only used at altitude • Fuel atomises into vapour • Evaporates long before reaching the ground Air traffic control ensures: • It happens away from populated areas • At safe altitudes • In approved airspace Why smaller planes don’t dump fuel • Short haul aircraft (A320, 737) often: • Can land at or near MTOW • Or burn fuel quickly • Most don’t even have fuel dump systems Wide bodies do because they need them. Important clarification Fuel dumping is: • Rare • Regulated • Recorded • Investigated • Not secret Pilots don’t like doing it but safety comes first. Fuel is dumped to protect the aircraft and everyone on board.
