Nearly one in three is married off before she's even 15, the highest rate in all of Asia! The law says 18, but loopholes allow parents to consent at 16, and that "exception" has become the rule, not the protection. But the crisis doesn't end at marriage. A 2024 UNFPA survey revealed that "7 out of 10 women" have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime. In just the past year, 41% faced abuse in their own homes: places that should be sanctuaries, not battlegrounds. Only 23% of women can freely decide when and whether to have children, while 77% have no say over their own bodies. For decades, every government has taken political advantage of the worsening women and children's rights situation, appeasing religious forces for votes while girls pay the price with their futures. It's a calculated trade: power in exchange for silence on violence, child marriage, and discrimination. 🏛️ But currently, under Nobel laureate Dr. Yunus's interim government, Bangladesh is experiencing one of its worst periods for women's and girls' safety. In the first six months of 2025 alone, over 4,200 cases of rape and sexual assault were officially recorded. A sharp increase from 3,100 cases during the same period in 2024. Among the 342 rape cases reported in early 2025, 87% of victims were girls under 18. Child rape cases have surged nearly 75% in just seven months. At least 40 incidents of extremist-led violence against minorities occurred in the first half of 2025. Over 100 Sufi shrines have been attacked since August 2024, often in broad daylight while law enforcement watched. ⚖️ When rape survivors seek justice, they find only closed doors. The conviction rate? LESS THAN 1%. Meanwhile, 80% of street-based sex workers have endured physical or sexual violence. For LGBTQ+ individuals facing criminalization, nearly half contemplate suicide and almost a third have attempted it. The message is apparently clear here: political survival matters more than human lives.
