#outdoorsadventure #joerobinet #snowshoeingSleeping under a tree was the idea we had in mind when Joe Robinet and I headed into the bush by snowshoe. We planned to convert a spruce tree into a survival shelter and then cook up some steaks over the fire. (Check out the link to Joe's channel below). Trekking through deep snow, we passed Joe's "fort", a sturdy survival that he's put out some great videos on. Continuing on a ways, we eventually came up to a great spot to build the shelter we had in mind. We found a small clearing where the branches on surrounding trees grew down to the ground. We soon found four trees growing side by side. Two White Spruce and two Balsom Fir trees. The snow had pinned their lower branches down to the ground and we could see that with a little work, we could convert this naturally occurring structure into a good shelter. Tucking under the branches, Joe began cutting the bottom ones off of the tree trunks to create space. I started cutting evergreen boughs which we used for bedding and to pile up on top of the outer branches for more protection and to hold the snow we'd shovel ontop. After putting in some time on the shelter, it was time to gather firewood and we were able to find some good hardwood. Joe lit a one-match fire and we started cooking up steaks. Joe cooked his on a grill while I tried to "out bushcraft" Joe by using a technique inspired by "geestabaun" a method used by indigenous Cree of Northern Ontario used to splay out and roast geese over the fire. It worked well with the steak and we both enjoyed a good meal after a long day of working in the bush. The weather was seasonably nice and after a great sleep, we melted some drinking water in the morning before leaving camp for the trek out. In all, it was a great trip and a good example of how winter camping, and even practising winter survival skills can be very enjoyable if you have the right clothing, sleeping system and a little know-how.
