///@mnnature_awesomeness: Seeing rainbows in the water? It’s not necessarily a reason to panic. When plants and other organic matter decompose, they can release natural oils into the water. Some bacteria will also oxidize the naturally occurring iron, manganese, and copper that is dissolved in water and turn it into a thin sheen that looks like oil. If you tap it with a rock, a stick, or your finger, the sheen will break apart. In contrast, spilled gasoline or oil on the water will reform as a blob if you poke it and might have an odor as well. Report any suspected spills to your city public works department to investigate. For large spills and emergency situations, call the Minnesota Duty Officer at 800-422-0798. #oil #pokeit #pollution #waterpollution #rivers #nature #science #chemistry #minnesota
