We have a tendency to imagine that using has the magic property to improve everything, be it during good or bad times. We say we can never enjoy social occasions unless there's that drink in our hand - that those good times can never be as good, whilst the bad times will be unbearably difficult. Yet there is no drug, beverage or behaviour in the universe that somehow enhances our best moments and helps us get through bad ones at the same time; it's just totally illogical and based on a strange belief that the effect is always positive. These are polar opposites, yet we believe them with absolute faith despite the obvious evidence. On the contrary, bars filled with drunks are not happy places, and no chronic gambler is happy. My three-month relapse was caused by falling for this delusion after a serious accident. Just like Madame Bollinger, "I drink it when I am happy, and I drink it when I am sad..."

What a relief to know that I'm not responsible for everybody and everything! If you are feeling impatient, stressed or frustrated, you are likely trying to control people, places, and things you can't control or direct. You may be slipping back into that old behavior of wanting situations to turn out according to your plans now. In recovery, we continually learn to let go of running the show. We realize that there is some other force in charge of everything. It is a wonderful feeling to realize that you don't have to have things go your way. If one door closes, another good door will open if you are faithfully practicing what you learn at meetings, therapy, the Big Book, the Sober app Forum, whatever keeps you sober.
TODO: Repeat three times, "So nice to know, I don't run the show." Say this phrase throughout this day. Feel the freedom. Stop yourself today if you are trying to control others and outcomes. Make a decision to be a player, not a director. Play according to a sober lifestyle.
