Upon USS Peacock approaching the Nautilus, the commander of Nautilus would hail that the war was over but would refuse to haul his flag down from the ship. As a result the USS Peacock would fire a single broadside, causing substantial damage to the Nautilus and killing several crewmembers. The Nautilus would quickly surrender and as members of the USS Peacock came aboard the ship they were presented with documents proving the war was over. Once those documents had been reviewed by the captain of the USS Peacock, he released the Nautilus.
