Operation Magic Carpet was the massive post-WWII sealift to repatriate 8 million U.S. service personnel. Carriers such as USS Saratoga removed all aviation equipment to make room for more bunks. This is the Saratoga with 3,700 of the 30,000 men it carried home. WIthin a year of Japan's surrender, the Navy had been reduced from 3,400,000 personnel to 500,000.
