Why were George Washington-class submarines designed with 16 launching tubes? The subs could have had any number of missiles but there needed to be a balance between payload and living space for the crew. The decision was left to a committee consisting of 7 members from the design team. Each member wrote down the number of missiles he thought the subs should carry. The numbers were added up and divided by 7. The result was 16.
