The 13th of October marks the birth of the American Navy. But today, I would like to focus on the birth of the American Marines.
In 1775, the U.S. Marine Corps was established to safeguard American ships and interests.
Decades later, during the Barbary (MUSLIM) Wars (1801–1805), the Corps earned its enduring legacy, immortalized in the Marine Hymn’s “Shores of Tripoli” for its role in confronting North African pirate states.
These Barbary Pirates, driven primarily by economic gain, terrorized the Mediterranean and North Atlantic, extorting ransoms and enslaving crews with brutal treatment. President Thomas Jefferson, rejecting the costly tributes paid by other nations, deployed naval forces to protect American trade, targeting states like Tripoli, Tunis, Morocco, and Algiers - known collectively as the Barbary Coast - in a pragmatic stand against piracy.
This chapter of history, now largely absent from school curricula, holds vital lessons about power, diplomacy, and cultural dynamics. The adage that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it rings true: the Barbary Pirates’ unprovoked attacks on the fledgling American Republic highlight the dangers of appeasement and the need for resolve. By restoring real history to education, we equip future generations to navigate today’s complexities with the wisdom of the past.
When Thomas Jefferson saw there was no negotiating with them, he formed what is now the Marines (soldiers stationed on ships).
