Matthew Gault Emery, the last Republican Mayor of Washington ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: born September 28th 1818 Matthew Gault Emery, the last Republican Mayor of Washington At twenty-two, the aspiring architect settled in Washington for work on government projects. His company cut and laid stones for buildings including the U.S. Treasury, the Patent Office and the Washington Monument.Elected alderman in 1854, Emery helped establish the DC Republican Party. He served as parade marshal at the presidential inauguration of Abraham Lincoln. During the Civil War, this militia captain operated a signal fort that communicated between outlying fortifications and downtown.
