Why are some politicians so worried about raw milk? They certainly aren't concerned about alcohol and nicotine, which are proven to kill people. Follow the money folks. But with that being said let's look at why pasteurization was even invented. It began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when typhoid, tuberculosis and scarlet fever were killers. TB is a very rare problem in the United States nowadays, with 7 in 1 million cows a year becoming infected. Many states are deemed to be TB free. Do I believe pasteurization is a bad thing? No I don't. It has its place. And just because you have a couple of cows and CAN sell raw milk doesn't mean you should. If you don't understand zoonotic pathogens, test for them, and know what a sick cow looks like than be responsible and don't offer it to the public for consumption. In my humble opinion if you're not milking in a closed system and rapid cooling you shouldn't be selling raw milk either. But...food freedom is a big deal to me. As long as your customer is aware of the benefits AND risks of raw milk go at it. "Raw" vegetables are far more of a problem than raw milk. The government needs to stay out of ag. Period.
