In January 2023, first-grade teacher Abby Zwerner was sh*t inside her classroom at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, after one of her 6-year-old students brought a firearm from home and opened fire.
The child fired a single sh*t that went through Zwerner’s hand before striking her in the chest. Even gravely wounded, she managed to move her entire class out of the room and into safety before collapsing in the hallway. She later underwent multiple surgeries and ultimately survived.
The incident sparked national outrage and led Zwerner to file a $40 million lawsuit against then-assistant principal Ebony Parker, accusing her of ignoring repeated warnings throughout the day that the student was armed.
According to several staff members, concerns about the child having a weapon were raised multiple times, yet Parker allegedly dismissed or failed to act on those reports.
Parker is now facing felony child neglect charges, and Zwerner’s civil case remains ongoing as both the school district and families continue to demand accountability.
