Awful news: JB Pritzker has signed a bill that will add an $8 billion surcharge on Illinois electricity bills this year. Huge rate increases are coming very soon. SB25, The Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act", signed was early 2026, the effect of the bill will soon impact electric bills in Illinois. IL State Senator Steve McClure: warns the law acts as a $8 billion surcharge that will trigger record-high electric bills and weaken grid reliability by reducing local control over projects. The law, approved only by Democrats will removes rate caps, forces ratepayers to fund unproven technologies, and allows battery storage facilities to be located closer to residential areas. McClure: “this new energy legislation represents an $8 billion hike on the families of Illinois. Instead of shoring up our grid, this new plan will rely on unproven technologies that will only increase the chance of rolling brownouts. Worse yet, the plan takes away local control and will allow battery storage facilities to be built just 150 feet away from homes. The people of this state can’t afford to pay any more, and they deserve a stable power supply.”
