Zamzam Jama, 50 pleaded guilty in February of last year to one count of money laundering for her role in the scandal, which stole money from hungry kids during the COVID lockdowns.
Judge Nancy E. Brasel also sentenced her to one year of supervised release, and ordered full restitution of $491,245. Prosecutors had recommended 10-16 months.
Jama is part of the extended Jama family suspects tied to Brava Restaurant & Cafe LLC in Rochester.
Brava alone stole between $4.3 million to $5.6 million from federal taxpayers
Jama personally stole at least $491,245, putting it into shell companies she helped create, then spent it on personal items like vehicles and a down payment on a home in Rosemount, Minnesota.
About 89% of those charged in the Feeding Our Future scheme are Somali migrants per U.S. Attorney’s Office data.
