Many of America’s Founding Fathers held surprisingly humble or practical jobs before they became statesmen, soldiers, and revolutionaries. This outdoor, hands‑on job gave him both income and a deep familiarity with the land and its owners. Schoolteacher – John Adams Early in life, John Adams worked as a schoolmaster in Worcester, Massachusetts, teaching children while deciding whether to pursue law. He found the work routine and unstimulating, but it shows how even a future president started with a modest classroom job. Farmer and planter – Thomas Jefferson Jefferson is best remembered as a statesman and writer, but he also operated as a working farmer and planter at Monticello Brewer and merchant – Samuel Adams Samuel Adams initially worked as a maltster and brewer in Boston, trying to run a family‑based brewery business. The enterprise struggled financially, and he later shifted into politics, but his early role was very much a hands‑on tradesman’s job. Printer and shopkeeper – Benjamin Franklin Franklin famously started as an apprentice printer and later owned a print shop and newspaper in Philadelphia. He also ran a small store and was deeply involved in publishing almanacs and pamphlets, making him more a working printer‑publisher than a “genteel” gentleman. Clerk and shipping clerk – Alexander Hamilton Before rising as a lawyer and statesman, Hamilton began as a shipping clerk in a Caribbean trading firm on St. Croix at age about 13, helping run day‑to‑day operations while its owner was at sea. This early mercantile apprenticeship grounded his later expertise in finance. These humble careers—in farming, teaching, printing, brewing, surveying, and clerking—show how many of the Founders were not born in lofty offices but worked in practical trades that shaped their views on labor, property, and government.
